We are brought into the world perfect, but as life goes on, people and circumstances try to bend us to match their version of perfection. As we bend, cracks and breaks will start to form, but as life goes on we begin to realise that these are the things that make us. By embracing these breaks, we become stronger and find the person we were destined to become. The arrow piercing the heart represents the cause of the heartbreak. The resin represents the feeling of drowning in the emotions of trauma. This sculpture was inspired by the news of another school shooting in America. This news made me think of my kids and what it would be like to live with that fear everyday. I looked up the statistics for under 17s dying due to gun violence and was taken aback. On average, 35 die a week. That is a classroom full of kids each week. Each bullet within the piece represents one life lost in a week. It made me think how disconnected people can be from the reality of the facts and how living with something for long enough can make it feel normal.
